On April 27th, the poetry interactive exhibition "Flores Raras: A Group Portrait of Uruguayan Women Poets" opened at the multicultural library on the 8th floor of the north tower. Co-organized by the Guangzhou Library and the Consulate General of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in Guangzhou, the event marks the first comprehensive showcase of the lives and representative works of 55 Uruguayan female poets, with poetry as a cultural bridge.

Scene from the poetry interactive exhibition

Inspired by the 2023 Uruguayan poetry anthology "Flores Raras", the exhibition chronologically presents female poets from the late 18th century to the present. It features internationally renowned figures such as Ida Vitale (1923–present), winner of the "Cervantes Prize", the highest honor in Spanish-language literature, as well as lesser-known voices in domestic literary circles.

Visitors engaging in poetry collages

Visitors can explore biographical accounts of the poets, read Spanish originals and Chinese translations of works such as "The Dove" and "Rest". The exhibition also provides bilingual audio recitations, art installations, and interactive poetry collages, encouraging "poetry listening" and "check-in" participation through creative activities.

Public reading of Uruguayan poetry

At the opening ceremony, Fernando Lugris, Uruguayan Ambassador to China, emphasized that female writers are emblematic of Uruguayan literature and highlighted the event's role in strengthening bilateral cultural ties. In 2023, facilitated by the Consulate, Guangzhou Library and Uruguay's National Library established a partnership involving book exchanges. This exhibition, centered on donated Uruguayan books, aims to deepen cultural connections through verse. Acting Consul General Facundo Simón expressed pride in the libraries' collaboration, noting its academic and cultural significance.

A Uruguay-themed cultural and poetry sharing session was held concurrently, featuring cross-cultural exchanges between Uruguayan scholars and Jinan University's Spanish faculty. The exhibition will run until June 8th (closed on Wednesdays), accompanied by a Uruguayan book fair, reading clubs, and poetry jewelry workshops, inviting citizens to immerse themselves in Uruguayan culture.
